Also considered for this concern: Upper Eyelid Skin Tightening, Botox / Neuromodulators and Brow Lift.

Causes+

Four different things produce the same tired-looking eye, and each is treated differently. Loose skin, A low brow, A weak lifting muscle, Puffiness from fat.

What to expect

From consultation to final result

The stages below are typical for this procedure. Your own timeline is confirmed at the consultation.

Tap to flip

The first week

What is normal

In the first week expect swelling, bruising and a tight, gritty feeling in the lids. The eyes often water one hour and feel dry the next, and that evens out as the lids heal. Cold compresses for the first forty-eight hours and sleeping with your head raised keep the swelling down.

Weeks two to six

Getting back to normal

Most patients are back at desk work in seven to ten days, once the sutures are out and the bruising has faded enough to be covered. No bending, lifting or exercise that raises your blood pressure for two weeks.

Tap to flip

The result

How long it lasts

Upper-lid results generally hold for ten years or more, and lower-lid results often longer, because the fat that was removed does not come back. The face does keep aging around them. Sun protection and a stable weight both help the result last. Not smoking helps as well.

What patients say

Patient reviews from Google, names attached. 4.3 average across 67 reviews.

I had my first consultation with Dr. Tumi, and he was beyond fabulous. From the jump, he shook my hand and introduced himself to my daughter and I. He included her in the conversation and even had some laughs with her. This made the situation alot less vulnerable given the reason I was there. He is the second surgeon that I have met with, and wasn't going to be my last, until I decided he was the last. It is because of his honesty, integrity, authenticity and professionalism, that made my choice. I saw some comments in the reviews where people stated he made them feel uncomfortable while getting undressed and for me that did not happen. He was respectful of my space and was sure I was covered appropriately. I went to see him for a breat augmentation and Dr. Tumi did not think an augmentation would be required. I really appreciated that about him, because the first surgeon I met, insisted this procedure, despite me only wanting a lift with fat transfer. This is a huge cost savings for me, and more natural for my body type, and in my opinion. Dr. Tumi did not make me feel rushed with any questions and time was not ever an issue for him. He wanted to be sure I knew all that I needed. His office manager Karyn, was absolutely wonderful and easy to connect with. She took her time to discuss things that I did not think of and even called me over the weekend when I emailed her some more questions. This is above and beyond care. My surgery is April 20th and I know I am in good hands. I will follow this up with further reviews in the future and have no doubt it will be 5 stars across the board. One last thing... of all the reviews, I paid attention to the ones where the patients actually had surgery, not the ones who were disgruntled about the office staff or OHIP issues. After all, it is the surgeon we want precision with, isn't it? Thanks Karyn and Dr. Tumi, for making me comfortable and content.

What blepharoplasty involves at each stage, from the first consultation through to the result.

Step 01 · Consultation

The consultation

A consultation is an assessment and a conversation, and you are not committing to anything by having one.

  • Assessment of what is actually causing what you see
  • What can be done, what cannot, and what it involves
  • A written quote once the assessment is done

Frequently asked questions

The cost depends on whether you are having the upper lids, the lower lids or both. It also depends on the anesthetic and the setting that suit your case. That is why the figure is quoted at the consultation rather than before it. You receive the figure in writing at the consultation. Not covered by OHIP. Financing is available through Beautifi, Medicard and Credit Medical.

Upper lids alone typically take about an hour. Upper and lower together take one to two hours. Either way you are home the same day.

Upper-lid surgery is done under local anesthetic in the clinic's own procedure room, with sedation available if you want it. Lower-lid and combined cases are done under sedation or a general anesthetic in an operating room. Dr. Tumi confirms which applies to you at the consultation.

Sutures come out at five to seven days, most people are back at desk work in seven to ten days, and exercise resumes at two weeks. Bruising is largely gone by two weeks; the last of the swelling takes a month or two.

The local anesthetic stings for a few seconds as it goes in, and after that you feel pressure rather than pain. Afterwards the lids feel tight and gritty for a few days. Cold compresses and ordinary over-the-counter pain relief are usually all that is needed.

Yes, and it is placed where it is hardest to find. The upper-lid incision sits in the natural crease and is hidden whenever your eye is open. The lower-lid incision sits just beneath the lashes, or inside the lid, where there is no external incision. Eyelid skin heals into a fine pale line that is difficult to find once it has matured.

Typically ten years or more for the upper lids, and often longer for the lower, because removed fat does not return. The face continues to age around the result.

Dr. Tumi first establishes what is causing the heaviness. Lid skin, a low brow and a weak lid muscle can look much the same in a mirror, and each one calls for a different operation. Your eyes are also assessed in their own right, since dryness and thyroid conditions change what is safe to do. That examination is the answer to this question.

Cosmetic procedures are not covered. Some functional and reconstructive work is considered differently and is discussed case by case.

Dr. Kamal Tumi performs all surgery at this practice, and he is the surgeon you meet at the consultation. You will not meet one surgeon and be operated on by another. ---
